People deserve access to mental health care if they want it, yet financial barriers often prevent individuals from seeking professional support. While sliding scale fees and pay-what-you-can options are common ways to make therapy more affordable, they aren’t the only solutions available. Several organizations offer payment assistance and voucher programs designed to support those facing financial hardships. Here’s a look at some valuable resources for mental health counseling.

The Loveland Therapy Fund focuses on providing mental health support to Black women and girls. Through partnerships with various therapy directories, recipients gain access to culturally competent professionals nationwide. The fund covers 4-12 therapy sessions, aiming to make continued care financially feasible after the program ends. Black women and girls interested in financial assistance can apply through their quarterly signup form.

Rise Above the Disorder (RAD) offers global support for those unable to afford mental health care. They cover the cost of evidence-based therapy approaches, medications, and even legal psychedelic treatments. RAD's program has no session limit, with social workers guiding participants until they can comfortably take over payments. The average participant receives 26 therapy sessions over six months.

Farmer Wellness Program supports Wisconsin farmers and their families facing unique stressors like unpredictable weather, labor shortages, and market fluctuations. It offers free counseling vouchers for in-person sessions with local mental health providers. Farmers can request these vouchers through the Wisconsin Farm Center Helpline at (800) 942-2474.

Support for the Psyche (SFTP) raises funds through donations and merchandise sales to cover the cost of therapy for applicants. They typically fund three therapy sessions (up to $300) per applicant, working directly with therapy providers or reimbursing online session costs. SFTP prioritizes financially needy applicants based on factors like income, dependents, and insurance status.

To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) offers a Treatment & Recovery Scholarship Program aims to remove financial barriers to mental health care. Open to both U.S. and international applicants, the program typically offers three to six months of care, funding individual therapy sessions at $65-$100 per session. Scholarships may be extended, reflecting TWLOHA's understanding that effective mental health care is a long-term process.

Give an Hour connects people with mental health services, emphasizing person-centered, barrier-free access. For certain programs, their network of providers offers pro bono therapy sessions, further reducing financial obstacles to care.

If you're struggling to afford mental healthcare, these organizations might be able to help.
